On behalf of the team at the Bulleke-Bek Brunswick Cinema, welcome to our sixth annual season, presented with utmost thanks to the filmmakers and our other friends at home and abroad. As always, our program emphasises enjoyment, variety, and giving audiences something to talk about, while aiming to source films ethically and maximise audiovisual quality as far as we can. Mark your diaries now, or just stroll down to Hope St on a Thursday or Friday after work and see what’s playing. Shakespeare. Sartre. Esther Williams. Factory House Band. Avant-gardes old and new. Mash-ups, cut-ups, fuck-ups, cartoons, home movies, world premieres, sneak previews, special guests, chances to join in. Films long unseen, underseen, never before seen, seen in a new light. Films you can’t see anywhere else. Slogans you might have seen elsewhere. A shock to the system. A nice night’s entertainment. Healthy living. Hell is other people. Wine and popcorn on the house. Su Hui-Yu’s work unfolds at the intersections of multi-channel video installation, painting, dance, and performance. This selection of shorts brings together a queer body of work that explores the encounter between technique, memory, and local and universal histories that reconfigure the hegemonic formulas of domination — heteronormative, patriarchal, state-driven, colonial — exercised by agencies of Taiwanese power and reproduced through a symbolic imaginary that circulated across radio, television, literature, fashion, and other cultural fields during the second half of the twentieth century.

A compilation feature in five parts: Leaving Church, Damaged, 27 Thoughts About My Dad, Rain, Buffalo Death Mask. While some of these orphans have enjoyed a life on their own, they have been brought together in a family choir. Each offers a take on paternity. A blend of found and unfound footages collect into daddy lookouts, though of course “father” could mean “mother,” or even a book that never ends, an arts festival that holds the golden bar, a friend with nothing but answers.

Head CuratorCristóbal Escobar is a Lecturer in Screen Studies at The University of Melbourne and Film Programmer at the Santiago International Documentary Film Festival (FIDOCS). He is the co-founder of the Screening Ideas program and curator for the MUBI platform in Latin America and the BBBC in Melbourne.

The day of the symposium will culminate with the AUSTRALIAN PREMIER of When Clouds Hide the Shadow directed by José Luis Torres Leiva and brought to the BBBC by founding BBBC superstar curator Cristóbal Escobar . Opening with a week of silent films before dawn, the BBBC welcomed in its new program with the brainchild of BBBC Curator, Jake Wilson.
Silents Before Sunrise featured films from the dawn of cinema to a soundtrack of Brunswick’s morning routine through the depth of winter.

BBBC 3
The third instalment of our annual cinema returns in February and March, 2023.
BBBC 3 sees the return of two of our curators, Dr Cristobal Escobar and Jake Wilson, and our favourite musical collaborators, The Factory House Band.
The program for BBBC 3 consists of a weekly scheduled films and special weekend events.

A truly handcrafted program, including the clandestine pre-release of Ana Vaz’s Night in America, which inspired it selection at the Melbourne International Film Festival later in the year.
Saturday Special Event Screenings
Highlights of BBBC 2023 were our two special event screenings.
Starting with Brian McKenzie’s 1984 documentary, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, which focused on a group rough drinkers who hung out in Royal Park. With director Brian McKenzie in attendance and a full house it was an extraordinary event, which inspired the film to be included in the MIFF 2023 program.
Followed by Rick Charnoski’s Warm Blood (2022), the trans-Pacific collaboration and pulp detective fiction meets social welfare documentary about life on the fringe of Modesto, CA.
